Shift Work Sleep Disorder

Definition

Shift work sleep disorder (SWSD) is a circadian rhythm sleep disorder characterized by insomnia, excessive sleepiness, or both, resulting from working during non-traditional hours, such as night shifts or rotating shifts. This disruption in the body's natural sleep-wake cycle can lead to difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, and feeling rested during waking hours.
