Definition

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. It is characterized by severe coughing spells that can make it difficult to breathe, often followed by a high-pitched 'whoop' sound during inhalation. Pertussis can affect people of all ages but is particularly dangerous for infants and young children.
