PAXMAN Scalp
The PAXMAN Scalp Cooling System is available at Smilow Cancer Hospital and several of our Care Centers, including Orange, Greenwich, Guilford, Fairfield, Trumbull, and Torrington. The PAXMAN Scalp Cooling System helps reduce hair loss for people undergoing chemotherapy for solid tumors (such as ovarian, breast, colorectal, bowel, and prostate cancer).
PAXMAN Scalp Cooling (also known as cold cap treatment) empowers patients to feel a greater sense of control, and Smilow is one of the first Hospitals in the U.S. to offer it. Chemotherapy-Induced Alopecia (CIA) is consistently ranked as one of the most feared side effects of chemotherapy treatment. Chemotherapy works by targeting all rapidly dividing cells in the body. Hair is the second fastest dividing cell in the body and this is the reason why many chemotherapy drugs cause hair loss. The rate of hair retention by using the PAXMAN Scalp Cooling System varies from patient to patient and is dependent upon the chemotherapy regimen. It is important for patients to continue with scalp cooling at each chemotherapy treatment in order get the full benefits of hair preservation. Current scalp cooling data gives a 50% chance of keeping at least 50% of your hair.
