Frequently Asked Questions about Genetic Testing
Does the lab perform maternity or paternity testing?
This lab does not perform maternity or paternity testing. Please consult your primary healthcare provider.
Do you do familial variant testing?
The laboratory will perform testing for familial variants as a Single Site test. When ordering, please provide information on the variant of interest and, if possible, a positive control. For those ordering through EPIC, please select “Single Gene Analysis (DNA LAB) (YMG),” and in the comment field, specify the familial variant and if their family member was previously tested in our lab.
Can the lab re-analyze the data obtained from the previous analysis?
Reanalysis can be ordered for tests with an initial negative result or variants of uncertain significance after one year. Significant changes to the patient’s clinical features may require a new test and not be considered reanalysis.
What is reported on an exome test?
The “Reported results to healthcare providers” section above details this answer.
Is variant reclassification available?
The option to request reclassification of specific individual variants is available upon request.
Providers can initiate the process by submitting a formal request if there is a need to reevaluate the classification of a particular variant. The goal is to ensure accurate and up-to-date information for clinicians, researchers, and individuals who rely on variant classification for diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic purposes.
How long does the lab retain a specimen?
The lab retains the remaining purified DNA specimens for at least three years.
