Varenicline for treatment of e-cigarette dependence

This study aims to understand if varenicline can help people who regularly use e-cigarettes stop or reduce vaping. Participants will receive an 8-week supply of either varenicline or a matching placebo and answer weekly questionnaires. The study is fully remote and involvement lasts 12-weeks. Compensation of up to $185 is provided.

Trial Purpose and Description

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion:

  • age 18+
  • Daily use of an e-cigarette (>25 days in last month) for >6 months
  • Desire to quit e-cigarettes
  • Daily access to a smartphone or regular access to/use of email
  • Live in SC or CT
  • No use of combustible or non-combustible tobacco/nicotine products in the past 30 days

Exclusion:

  • Vulnerable populations/individuals incapable of providing their own consent
  • Medical contraindications for varenicline use
  • Current use of smoking cessation medication (NRT, meds, etc.)
  • Have a household member currently enrolled in study
  • Not proficient in English
  • Pregnant individuals (female participants <55 will be sent pregnancy test to confirm non-pregnancy)
