Trial Purpose and Description

The purpose of this research study is to examine the effects of stress, pain, and alcohol on the brain. This project uses a combined multimethod subjective, hormonal and brain assessment (functional MRI) before and during treatment for chronic pain and/or alcohol use disorder. We are recruiting community volunteers who are social users of alcohol who may or may not experience chronic pain issues and individuals with alcohol use disorder who may or may not experience chronic pain issues.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Between ages 18-60 years.
  • Able to read and write English.

Exclusion Criteria

  • MRI specific exclusion criteria (e.g., claustrophobia, implanted metal in the body) due to safety.
  • Women who are pregnant, nursing or refuse to use a reliable form of birth control (as assessed by pregnancy tests at intake and two weeks prior to each MRI session).
