Shunt Procedure

Definition

A shunt procedure is a surgical intervention that involves the insertion of a tube, known as a shunt, to redirect the flow of bodily fluids, such as blood or cerebrospinal fluid, from one area to another. This procedure is commonly used to treat conditions like hydrocephalus, where excess fluid accumulates in the brain, or portal hypertension, where blood flow through the liver is obstructed.
