Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as a natural disaster, serious accident, terrorist act, war/combat, rape, or other violent personal assault. It is characterized by persistent and intrusive memories of the event, avoidance of reminders, negative changes in mood and cognition, and increased arousal or reactivity.
