MammoSite is a targeted radiation therapy to treat early-stage breast cancer. During the procedure, a small balloon is inserted through an incision into the lumpectomy cavity after breast-conserving surgery. An applicator delivers a radiation "seed" that produces a precise dose of radiation directly to the area where the tumor was removed, minimizing radiation exposure to healthy surrounding tissues. After treatment, the applicator and balloon are removed.
