Hairy cell leukemia is a rare, slow-growing cancer of the blood in which the bone marrow produces an excessive amount of abnormal B lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. These abnormal cells, called hairy cells due to their appearance under a microscope, can accumulate in the bone marrow and spleen, leading to anemia, infection, and an enlarged spleen.
