Babesiosis

Definition

Babesiosis is a tick-borne infectious disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Babesia, which invade and destroy red blood cells. The condition can range from mild to severe, with symptoms resembling those of malaria. It is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected ticks, but can also be transmitted through blood transfusions or from mother to child during pregnancy.
