Autologous Stem Cell Transplant, Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant
Definition
Autologous stem cell transplant, also known as autologous bone marrow transplant, is a medical procedure in which a patient's own stem cells are harvested from their bone marrow or peripheral blood, then stored and reintroduced into the patient's body after they have undergone high-dose chemotherapy or radiation therapy. This process helps to restore the patient's blood-forming and immune system functions that were damaged by the intensive treatments.
