Acute Pancreatitis
Definition
Acute pancreatitis is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that affects the pancreas. It occurs when the pancreas becomes inflamed, leading to pain, swelling, and damage to the organ. Symptoms of acute pancreatitis can range from mild to severe and can include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, rapid pulse, and tenderness in the upper abdomen. The most common cause of acute pancreatitis is gallstones. Other causes may include alcohol abuse, certain medications, infections, trauma, and metabolic disorders.
