Achalasia, Cardiospasm
Definition
Achalasia, also known as cardiospasm, is a rare disorder of the esophagus characterized by the inability of the lower esophageal sphincter to relax properly, leading to difficulty swallowing, regurgitation of food, and chest pain. This condition occurs due to the degeneration of nerve cells in the esophagus, causing a disruption in the coordinated muscle contractions required for swallowing.
